Visiting Mojave and Surrounding Area

On the western edge of the Mojave desert and the eastern foothills of the Tehachapi Mountains, Mojave is uniquely located at the crossroads of two major highways and is central to many aviation, historical, and natural treasures and activities.

Our list below samples just a few of the unique opportunities available to those who visit Mojave. 

History

  • Soledad Mountain Mining District – Gold and silver mining location since the 1890's. Mining operations on Soledad Mountain resumed in 2016 by Golden Queen Mining Company, LLC.
  • Garlock, Randsburg, and Johannesburg in the Rand Mining District - Mining ghost towns
  • Famous Tehachapi Loop railroad site – Historic railroad loop designed by William Hood in 1876 to help the Southern Pacific Railroad gain the summit of Tehachapi Pass. Perhaps the most famous railroad engineering site in the United States.
  • ​Tehachapi Heritage League and Museum
  • Tomo-Kahni State Historic Park​

  • Red Rock Canyon State Park
  • Jawbone Canyon - Off-Highway Vehicle Area provides a wide variety of riding opportunities including cross country play, trail riding, and advanced technical hill climbing opportunities.

  • Tehachapi Mountain Park - Woody's Peak (elevation, 7986 feet) overlooks the park from its dominion in the Tehachapi Mountains, the dividing line between the San Joaquin Valley and the Los Angeles Basin.
  • Saddleback Butte State Park
  • Devil's Punchbowl Natural Area
  • Trona Pinnacles - unique geological features in the California Desert Conservation Area
  • Afton Canyon Natural Area - Known locally as "The Grand Canyon of the Mojave" for its dramatic geological formations, this is the only place where the Mojave River flows above ground year-round

  • Death Valley National Park

  • Scenic drive on Oak Creek Road -See the wind turbines between Mojave and Tehachapi on the historic route of early explorers. 
  • Rio Tinto Borax Visitor Center - The world's largest open pit borax mine.
  • 20 Mule Team Museum in Boron
  • Silver Saddle Ranch & Club - Bird watching just east of California City on 20 Mule Team Parkway.
  • The Cat House - Exotic Feline Breeding Compound Feline Conservation Center, Rosamond 
  • Willow Springs International Raceway  -Used for auto and motorcycle racing and testing, west of Rosamond on Rosamond Blvd.
  • Indian Wells Brewery - Makers of the famous ‘Mojave Red’ and ‘Mojave Gold’ beers and other artisan beers.
  • California Living Museum in Bakersfield
  • Maturango Museum in Ridgecrest
  • Mountain High Ski Resort
  • Inyo-Mono Ski Resorts - Mojave is the gateway to Inyo and Mono County ski resorts and winter wonderlands.
